How I got started
When my son Alessandro (we call him Alex) turned one year old, I made him the famous "Tweety Bird" cake for his birthday. At a yard sale, I found a supersized sheet cake pan, 4" in depth, which was perfect for what I had in mind. I sketched the bird on kraft paper, and over a cooled gigantic cake, I laid out the template. As I started to cut the outline, "Tweety Bird" came to life!
As a fairly new mother, I have to say I was very proud of my work!
I wrapped the discarded cake pieces in pretty napkins, closed them with ribbons, and presented them to my neighbors. That was the very first thing that started me thinking, "What if I design cut-up cakes where all pieces are used?"
It was just a thought then, but over the years, that's exactly what I found myself doing. I designed for my two sons, Alex and Marcello, my granddaughter Kaylee, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Every time, all those cakes were done, the "blueprints" went into a box in my closet.
Years passed, until one day my son Alex inquired about my designs: "What did you do with them?" he asked. I replied, "They all are in a box in my closet, honey."
He said, "No, Mom, they belong out there, on the web, where everybody can see them..."
